ElleS
Can anyone help me with a query about therapists? My husband has apparently registered with a local therapist for his addiction, but when I have looked at their website, they are not BACP accredited. Does this matter? Does anyone have any advice? Thank you all x
IamEnough
Isn’t really know the answer to this ElleS, but I would be a bit dubious. I think this is such a specialist area it would be really valuable for your husband to talk to someone with experience of this area of addiction. The Laurel centre have some excellent therapists- both my husband and myself are seeing one (different therapists, via Zoom) . I realise not everyone has the financial ability to do this but if you could possibly stretch to a couple of sessions yourself I would highly recommend - I think they might have saved my life .... Also check out the online programmes for addicts and partners from the Laurel centre. Another resource I’ve found helpful is the free online meetings from Sanon.org hope that helps x
Ginny
Hi EllaS, I am one of the Laurel Centre counsellors. BACP accredited does mean the counsellor has completed a certain level of therapy hours (at least 450 hours to even apply for accreditation) as well as submitting a lot of paperwork in the form of case studies and essays to prove to the BACP their level of competence. I think more importantly is that the counsellor is trained in the area of sex addiction / sexual compulsive behaviour / porn addiction. I would ask to see their level of qualifications in this specific area. You can find sex addiction trained therapists through the Laurel Centre or you can go to www.atsac.org.uk. This is a directory of sex addiction trained therapists. Best wishes Ginny
